PHOLOS
A Centaur, Pholos was a good friend of Hercules, and prior to his capture of the Erymanthian boar, the Greek hero called on him in the cave in which he dwelt, on Mount Pholoe. There the Centaur offered Hercules food, and also wine given theCentaurs by Dionysos, and which was the communal property of all the Centaurs. His people, however, aroused by the smell of the wine, surrounded the caveand a great fight ensued between they and Hercules, during which the hero slew mostof them.However, after the fight Pholos was examining one of the poisoned arrows ofHercules, when it fell into his foot and he died.
