BUE The cultural founder hero of the Gilbert Islands, Bue was the son of a woman magically impregnated by the sun. He set off in a canoe, determined to seek his inheritance of cleverness and knowledge from his father, and had to assault the sun to receive it. Bue taught men how to build canoes and houses, how to raise winds by magic, how to ensure health and prosperity, and how to compose dance chants.
