Wally Herger (born May 20, 1945), American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1987, representing the 2nd District of California (map), , including Chico, Redding and Red Bluff. He was born in Yuba City, California, attended California State University, Sacramento He grew up on his family’s 200-acre cattle ranch and plum farm in the Northern California town of Rio Oso. He also worked in the family’s oil and gas business. Well off financially, he draws heavily on his small-business and ranching background in his work on Capitol Hill.Herger is married to his second wife Pamela Sargent and has eight children. He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and sits on the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means, where he chairs the Subcommittee on Human Resources.
He was a cattle rancher, businessman and member of the California State Assembly (1980-1986) before being elected to the House of Representatives.
Although he is the fourth ranking member on the Ways and Means committee, Herger is not expected to enter the race to succeed chairman Bill Thomas when Thomas steps down in January 2007.
Herger is being challenged in the 2006 election by Bill Falzett.
