THOMAS 'STONEWALL' JACKSON
|
|
Biography: | Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson (January 20 or 21, 1824 - May 10, 1863) was an American teacher and soldier. He became a famous Confederate lieutenant-general during the American Civil War as a corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee. He was shot accidentally by his own troops at Chancellorsville and died of complications a few days later. Military historians consider his Shenandoah campaign and his envelopement of the Union right wing at Chancellorsville brilliant; they also note his weak and confused efforts during the Seven Days Battles around Richmond. He is, however, acknowledged to be one of the most gifted tactical commanders in United States history. His death was a severe setback for the Confederacy; after his wounding, but before his death, General Robert E. Lee stated "He has lost his left arm; I have lost my right arm". |
