Selena was born as the youngest child of Mexican immigrants and released her first album by the age of 12. At the Tejano Music Awards in 1987, she took the award for Female Vocalist of the Year, which jump started her career and landed her a contract with EMI. In the early 1990s she rose to stardom in Spanish-speaking countries such as Mexico with albums such as Selena Live! which won her an Grammy award for best Mexican-American album in 1993 and Amor Prohibido, which was released in 1994 and spawned four number one Spanish hits. Her untimely death at age 23 gave her legendary status in the United States and Mexico. Two weeks after her death, on April 12, 1995, George W. Bush, then the Governor of Texas, declared April 16, her birthday, "Selena Day" in Texas. In 1997, a film based on her life starring Jennifer Lopez was made. Selena is currently commemorated with a museum and a bronze life-sized statue in Corpus Christi, Texas, and is visited by hundreds of fans each week. |
