James G. Blaine (January 31, 1830 - January 27, 1893) was a U.S. Representative, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, U.S. Senator from Maine and a two-time United States Secretary of State. He also ran for President of the United States, obtaining the 1884 Republican nomination, but never won the Presidency, losing to Grover Cleveland. As such, he was the only Mainer to ever receive a major-party Presidential nomination.
