Biography: | David W. Stewart (January 22, 1887 - February 10, 1974) was a United States Senator from Iowa. Born in New Concord, Ohio, he attended the common schools and graduated from Geneva College (in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania) in 1911. He was a high school teacher and athletic coach from 1911 to 1914, and graduated from the law department of the University of Ohio in 1917. He was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Sioux City, Iowa. During the First World War, he served overseas as a first sergeant (1918-1919) and was discharged. He resumed the practice of law in Sioux City, and was president of that city's Chamber of Commerce in 1925. He was appointed, on August 7, 1926, as a Republican to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Albert B. Cummins, and was subsequently elected November 2, 1926, to complete the unexpired term ending March 3, 1927, and served from August 7, 1926, until March 3, 1927. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1926; resumed the practice of law. He was president of the board of trustees of Morningside College from 1938 to 1962, and died in Sioux City in 1974; his interment was in Logan Park Cemetery. |
