Christy Turlington (born January 2, 1969 in Walnut Creek, California) is an American supermodel best known for representing Calvin Klein fragrances since 1987. She had also worked on various Maybelline Cosmetic campaigns. Giorgio Armani has used her talents to display his designs on the runway. She was also a co-founder of the now defunct Fashion Café.
Turlington hails from Danville, California. Her father was British and her mother is from El Salvador.
An ex-smoker whose father died of lung cancer, Turlington is an anti-smoking activist.
Author of one book, Living Yoga: Creating A Life Practice. She has been practicing Yoga for almost 15 years.
Christy appeared in the hit documentry about fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, titled (see ) Unzipped, and also the Fashion mockumentry film, ) Prêt-à -Porter by famed director Robert Altman.
A biographical documentary was filmed covering her life on the Fashion Runways by director Robert Leacock, titled (see ) Catwalk. The documentry was filmed in 1993 and premiered in 1996.The film followed Christy and her fellow models like Naomi Campbell, Yasmin Le Bon, Kate Moss and Carla Bruni as they jetted around London, Milan, Paris and New York for the Spring Fashion Weeks.
It featured rare footage of what goes on behind the scenes at big shows including fittings, parties, shopping and catfights. The film was beautifully shot in part black&white and part color. It also featured many top designers at work like a young John Galliano, Karl Lagerfeld and Gianni Versace only one year before his death.
Christy started three successful business ventures. A skincare line, Sundari. And a two clothing lines, sponsored with Puma. Nuala, an active women's clothing Line and Mahanuala a women's yoga-wear line.
Christy's modeling career accomplishments are a long list. Numerous million dollar contracts like Maybelline, Chanel & Calvin Klein. She is one of only a few models to appear on the cover of 300 magazines. Although she is accredited of being one of the most successful Supermodels in history, Christy has rejected the label of Supermodel out of respect. She is also widely respected in the fashion industry as one of the friendliest and most professional models in the business.
Christy became a part of a band of models in the Supermodel movement in 1988 along with Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymour and Tatjana Patitz. Christy along with Naomi and Linda were frequently booked together and then became known as the "Trinity". Formed by fashion photographer Steven Meisel & model agent Gerald Marie (Linda's then-husband).
On June 7, 2003 she married actor-filmmaker Edward Burns. They have two children, a daughter, Grace (born October 25, 2003), and a son, Finn (born February 2006).
