Andrieus A. Jones (1862-1927) was a Democratic Party politician from New Mexico who represented the state in the United States Senate from 1917 until his death. Jones was born near Union City, Tennessee on May 16, 1862; he was educated locally in the common schools, and attended Bethel College in McKenzie. An 1885 graduate of Valparaiso University in Indiana, he taught school in Tennessee before moving to Las Vegas, New Mexico, where he was principal of the public schools from 1885 to 1887. While teaching, Jones studied law, being admitted to the bar in 1888 and beginning practice that year in Las Vegas. In 1893 he became president of the New Mexico Bar Association, and between that year and 1894 he served as the mayor of Las Vegas. From 1894 to 1898 he was the special United States district attorney for his area; beginning in 1908 he served as a member of the Democratic National Committee, holding that position until 1922. Jones ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 1912; from 1913 to 1916 he served as the First Assistant Secretary of the Interior. He resigned in 1916, the same year in which he was elected to the Senate. Reelected in 1922, he served until his death in Washington, D.C. on December 20, 1927. While in Congress he served as the chairman of the Committee on Woman Suffrage. He is buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Las Vegas.
